The constellations arch across the sky

The constellations arch across the sky
I know the Greek and Arab names they bear:
eight thousand years and more have left their mark
on me, through many other men. As well I hear
the voices of the gifted ones between;
such music, words, ideas my mind can hold.
And in this present lifetime, I have seen
the petals of man's knowledge part unfold.
While truth defeats all falsehood in the end,
through all the ages snarls the woolfish dread
that superstitious ignorance will rend
the minds and flesh of those who lead ahead.

The mass of men build mental prison bars
and, even now, read `fortunes in the stars'.
