The H.M.A.S Berrima landed at Kabakaul just after dawn on the 11th of September 1914 . An advanced party of 14 men went ashore under the command of Lieutenant Bowen to locate and seize a German wireless station which was supposed to lie inland from Kabakaul. Brian Pockley volunteered to accompany them.
