Sonnets by Simon Pockley
Like a host awaiting an unknown guest
Lamplit I work in the shoals of the night
This afternoon I'm taking my son for a Yarra walk
We've emptied trucks and trailers, unloaded groaning vans
Move in closer please, this device is locally made
We are loaded into this commuter flight
Wished away in a taxi reeking
This morning the council dumped big bins
I'm sure there must be something wrong with me
Counting the days of my years, I regret
I wake to soft sounds of rain on my roof
"You can fuck off," she replies in defence
There's a thumbs-up from across the floor
Nothing: the hush where no thoughts arise.
Sliding between bed sheets, this body’s height
Some ideas arrive without show
This vast aquatic centre brims blue
My home this christmas
or, there are my father's
desert sonnets
